Rediscovering Intimacy with God in a Busy World

Aug 23
4 min read

There is a quiet crisis unfolding in the lives of many Christians today. It is not a crisis of activity or effort. Most believers are busy—attending services, serving in ministries, praying for the sick, pursuing spiritual gifts, and working hard to live out their faith. The crisis is something far more subtle and far more devastating. It is the slow erosion of genuine intimacy with God.

What if everything we have been taught to prioritize has been slightly, but significantly, out of order? What if the key to a transformed life is not found in doing more, but in being more deeply connected to God?

The Number One Call on Your Life

Before you are a parent, a spouse, a worker, or a minister, you are called to one thing above all others. Jesus made this unmistakably clear when he was asked to name the greatest commandment. His answer, found in Matthew 22:37-40, was not a call to demonstrate power or build influence. It was a call to love—to love God with every dimension of your being, and to love your neighbor as yourself.

Everything else, every role, every responsibility, every gift, flows from that singular relational foundation. This is not a small theological distinction. It is the difference between a life that is genuinely transformed from the inside out, and a life that is merely performing Christianity from the outside in.

When Busyness Becomes a Barrier

The story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10:38-42 captures this tension with striking clarity. Jesus is physically present in their home, and Martha is consumed with serving—running around, preparing, managing every detail. Mary, meanwhile, has simply sat down at His feet and is listening to Him.

When Martha complains and asks Jesus to redirect her sister back to the work, His response is gentle but unmistakable. He tells her that Mary has chosen the better thing, and that it will not be taken from her.

Think about what that means. The Messiah Himself is sitting in the room, and the greatest thing a person can do in that moment is to stop, listen, and be present with Him. This story challenges the common assumption that busyness is a sign of spiritual vitality. Instead, it reveals how busyness can become a barrier to intimacy with God.

Why Intimacy with God Matters More Than Activity

Many Christians measure their faith by what they do rather than who they are becoming. They count hours spent in ministry, prayers offered, or services attended. While these activities are important, they are not the heart of the Christian life.

Intimacy with God is about relationship. It is about knowing God deeply, hearing His voice clearly, and experiencing His presence daily. This kind of connection transforms how we live, how we love, and how we serve.

Without intimacy, faith can become mechanical and hollow. It can lead to burnout, frustration, and a sense of emptiness. But when intimacy is restored, everything changes. Ministry becomes an overflow of love rather than a duty. Prayer becomes a conversation rather than a checklist. Life becomes a journey with God rather than a race to accomplish tasks.

Practical Steps to Rediscover Intimacy with God

Rediscovering intimacy with God requires intentionality. It means making space in your life to be with God, not just to do for God. Here are some practical steps to help you cultivate this vital connection:

  • Prioritize Quiet Time Set aside daily moments to be alone with God. This could be early in the morning, during a lunch break, or before bed. Use this time to listen, reflect, and simply be present with God.

  • Limit Distractions Turn off phones, close laptops, and create a space where interruptions are minimized. This helps your mind and heart focus on God without competing noise.

  • Practice Listening Prayer Instead of only talking to God, spend time listening. Ask God to speak, and be open to what He may reveal through Scripture, thoughts, or feelings.

  • Engage with Scripture Differently Rather than rushing through Bible reading, slow down and meditate on a single verse or passage. Ask how it applies to your life and what God might be saying through it.

  • Embrace Stillness Silence can be uncomfortable, but it is often where intimacy grows. Practice sitting quietly before God, allowing your heart to rest in his presence.

  • Be Honest with God Share your struggles, doubts, and fears openly. Intimacy grows through vulnerability and trust.

Overcoming Common Obstacles

Many believers want to deepen their intimacy with God but face obstacles that make it difficult. Recognizing these barriers is the first step to overcoming them.

  • The Pressure to Perform Feeling the need to prove your faith through actions can crowd out relationship. Remember that God desires your heart more than your activity.

  • Time Constraints Life is busy, but intimacy with God does not require long hours. Even brief, focused moments can be powerful.

  • Distractions and Noise Our culture is full of distractions. Creating intentional boundaries helps protect your time with God.

  • Spiritual Dryness Sometimes, intimacy feels distant. Persist in seeking God, trusting that he is present even when you do not feel it.

The Impact of Intimacy on Every Area of Life

When intimacy with God is restored, it transforms every part of life:

  • Relationships Loving God deeply enables you to love others more genuinely and patiently.

  • Work and Service Your efforts become expressions of worship rather than obligations.

  • Personal Peace A close connection with God brings calm in the midst of chaos.

  • Spiritual Growth Intimacy fuels growth, leading to greater faith, hope, and joy.

Moving Forward with Intimacy as Your Foundation

Rediscovering intimacy with God is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey. It requires daily choices to seek God’s presence above all else. When intimacy becomes your foundation, everything else in life finds its proper place.

Take time today to evaluate your priorities. Are you living from a place of connection with God, or are you caught in the cycle of busyness? Choose to sit at Jesus’ feet like Mary did. Choose the better thing that will not be taken from you.

Your relationship with God is the most important thing you will ever have. Nurture it, protect it, and watch how it changes everything.

If you want to deepen your intimacy with God, start small. Set aside five minutes tomorrow to simply be still and listen. Let that moment be the beginning of a new chapter in your spiritual life.
