Stop Practicing the Wrong Presence and Practice the Presence of God.

There is a quiet epidemic happening in the lives of believers, and most people do not even realize it is happening to them. It has nothing to do with a lack of church attendance, a shortage of Bible knowledge, or an absence of good intentions. It has everything to do with what you are actually full of — and what you are full of is exactly what you give away.

The concept is straightforward, but its implications are profound: you practice the presence of something every single day. The question is whether that something is God or everything else.

What Are You Practicing?

Most people spend their days practicing the presence of their circumstances. They wake up and immediately rehearse their fears, their financial pressures, their relational tensions, and their past failures. They scroll through headlines and fill themselves with outrage, anxiety, and dread. They replay old wounds and listen to the voice of accusation that reminds them, repeatedly, of every reason they are not enough.

And then they wonder why they feel empty.

The logic is simple: if you are full of fear, you give out fear. If you are full of doubt, you project doubt. If you are full of shame, you hide. You cannot give light when you are full of darkness, and you cannot give peace when you are full of anxiety. Whatever fills you will inevitably overflow into every relationship, every conversation, and every decision you make.

Shame, in particular, has a specific effect on people. It makes them hide. This pattern goes all the way back to the beginning. In Genesis 3, the moment Adam and Eve sinned, they sewed fig leaves together and concealed themselves from God. Before that moment, they had walked openly in His presence. Afterward, they hid. Shame does not just make you feel bad — it actively pulls you away from the very presence that could heal you.

The Presence You Were Made For

Psalm 16 describes a life rooted in the presence of God and declares that in His presence is fullness of joy. Not partial joy. Not occasional joy. Fullness. The kind of joy that does not depend on circumstances because it is sourced in something circumstances cannot touch.

Psalm 31 adds another layer, describing how God hides His people in the secret place of His presence — sheltering them from accusation, from strife, from the conspiracies that surround them. His presence is not just a pleasant spiritual experience. It is a place of genuine refuge.

But here is where many believers have been misled. The presence of God is not automatic. It is not a passive benefit that activates the moment you say a prayer and then requires nothing further from you. Jesus Himself — who came from the Father — regularly withdrew to seek the Lord. He went into the desert. He prayed through the night. He sought the Father before miracles and after them. If the Son of God pursued intimacy with the Father with that kind of intentionality, the idea that modern believers have somehow moved beyond the need to seek God is not a spiritual upgrade. It is a dangerous illusion.

Intimacy Is Not an Event

Think about what happens to a marriage when intimacy disappears. Two people who once chose each other with passion and intention gradually become roommates. The distance does not usually arrive all at once. It creeps in through neglect, through distraction, through the slow replacement of meaningful connection with mere coexistence. One day they look at each other and realize the warmth is gone.

The same thing happens in a person's relationship with God. You can attend services, use the right language, and maintain the external appearance of faith while your heart has grown cold and distant. You become spiritually dry — like hard, cracked soil that water cannot penetrate. When the presence of God is poured out, it has nowhere to go because the ground of your heart has not been prepared to receive it.

Hosea 10:12 speaks directly to this, urging people to break up their fallow ground and seek the Lord until He comes and rains righteousness upon them. Fallow ground is not ruined ground. It is simply ground that has been neglected, left unworked, and hardened by time. It can be broken up. It can be made ready. But it requires intentional effort.

How to Actually Seek the Lord

Seeking God is not a vague spiritual concept. It involves specific, practical postures of the heart. Deuteronomy 4:29 promises that if you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him — if you seek Him with your whole heart and your whole soul. Mark 12:30 echoes this in the form of a command: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. This is not a suggestion. It is the first and greatest commandment.

Seeking God happens through prayer, through turning away from sin, through humility, through thanksgiving, and through diligence. Hebrews 11:6 makes the reward explicit — God is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. The blessings attached to seeking Him are not small. Psalm 34 promises that those who seek the Lord will lack no good thing.

Acts 3:19 ties repentance directly to refreshing — describing times of refreshing that come from the presence of the Lord. This is not a one-time transaction. It is a continuous rhythm of returning, repenting, and being renewed.

It Is Time to Come Out of Hiding

Many people are living in a self-constructed prison, convinced the door is locked when it is standing wide open. The enemy reinforces the illusion, insisting there is no way out. Meanwhile, the invitation to walk free has never been revoked.

You cannot hide from God. Your hiding is futile, and it is costing you everything. The shame, the guilt, the accusations, the fear — none of it disqualifies you from His presence. But you have to stop practicing the presence of all those things and start practicing the presence of Him.

The fullness of joy, the peace that surpasses understanding, the life you were actually made for — it is all found in one place. It is time to seek it with everything you have.
